Gouache on Hemp Paper: A New Series by Nadine Salem
Nadine Salem is currently developing a new series of gouache works on hemp paper, continuing her exploration of flexible supports. Paper, vintage fabrics and unstretched canvas have become experimental surfaces on which she works primarily with gouache and acrylic paint.
This new series is part of an artistic approach in which the support itself plays an important role. At the same time, the artist is exploring heavyweight primed canvas and continuing her acrylic work on vintage fabrics. These experiments further develop Nadine’s ongoing research into flexible supports.
Hemp Paper: A Material with a Long History
Hemp paper is part of a very long history of papermaking. Archaeological discoveries in China have revealed the existence of paper containing hemp fibers as early as the final centuries BCE. Much later, in Europe, linen and hemp rags became essential raw materials for papermakers for several centuries. It was not until the 19th century, with the industrialization of paper production, that wood pulp gradually replaced these materials.
Hemp is still used today in certain papermaking processes and specialty papers. Choosing hemp paper therefore also echoes this long tradition of papermaking.
Landscapes Inspired by Journeys Near and Far
Nadine Salem’s subjects remain closely connected to what she encounters and observes: “the changing landscapes I discover through my tiny journeys or travels farther afield.”
The series brings together places she has visited, both near and far, along with several still lifes.
Ces dernières annoncent également un prochain rendez-vous : elles seront au cœur d’une future exposition partagée à la galerie de Royan.
Through gouache on hemp paper, acrylic on vintage fabrics and new flexible canvases, Nadine continues an artistic exploration in which the choice of support is an integral part of the creative process.
